Laminate Countertops

Laminate is a popular surface for kitchen countertops as it is one of the most cost-effective countertop options. Composed of a sturdy particleboard core with layers of tough bonded plastic, laminate offers durability as well as a broad variety of colors, patterns and textures that mirror the look of more expensive surfaces. These countertops can be very beautiful and functional in a home.

While laminate countertops stand up to a ton of spills and potential damage, they can still be damaged – usually from water. Laminate countertops have seams where the pieces are put together and excessive water can swell and buckle the countertops. Do not use excessive amounts of water and dry these countertops after they are cleaned to prevent water from getting into the seams.

Laminate countertops are also vulnerable to scratches, cuts and heat, so using a cutting board or trivet is recommended. Care must also be taken to clean wine or other stain-causing liquids quickly, as they can discolor the surface – a baking soda paste may need to be used to draw up the stain.
