Countertop Care – Granite

This super tough natural stone formed from volcanic magma, has endured for millions of years and has earned a reputation as a great building stone. It ranges in color and is known for its beauty, especially as counter-tops. Granite counter-tops are extremely hard and durable and highly stain, scratch and heat resistant. While these counter-tops will hold up to virtually all ordinary kitchen use, they are not indestructible and will chip, crack or break if they are mistreated.

Basic Cleaning:
To keep granite counter-tops clean, use a microfiber cloth to dust the surface and wipe the counter-top daily with water or as needed. Once a week it should be wiped down with a damp cloth and a stone cleaner formulated with a neutral pH. Never use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners as they can scratch, pit, and etch the surface of the stone. For oily stains, try a poultice made of a cup of flour or baking soda and 5 tablespoons of dish soap. Add water to make it the consistency of sour cream or yogurt. Place the solution directly on the stain and cover with plastic wrap overnight before washing away the poultice. Stains can be difficult to remove, but not impossible.

Seasonal Maintenance:
It is important to examine your granite counter-tops at least once a year, as they should be inspected to make sure there is no cracking or shifting at the seams. Granite counter-tops should be resealed when water that is splashed on the surface no longer beads up. Sealing is a regular maintenance task for granite. Also inspect for stains and scratches. If there are extremely difficult stains or any damage, contact a stone-care professional for repair.
